This picture "Iris (the
Dance)" was made in 1718 or
1719 by the famous French painter Jean-Antoine Watteau (1684-1721). You
can see it in the Gemäldegalerie der staatliche Museen
preussischer Kulturbesitz in Berlin. This sort of painting, people
singing, dancing and enjoying themselves in the open air, was very
popular at the time. So was the "French suite", consisting of a series
of stylized popular dances from all over Europe, often preceded by an
overture. Iris might be dancing a minuet, who knows.
